A New Season Begins...

August 29, 2012 - 1:31pm -- James Sullivan

Greetings everyone and welcome back to the new season of curling.  We are about three weeks away from ice in and if you’ve been helping out at the club getting floor ready, thank you.  Before we dig into some of the details that we want you to be aware of, we have a sad announcement

Gisella Willams, wife of Doug Williams, former three term President of Granite Curling Club and Life member of the Club passed away recently after a several week stay in hospital.  She will be interred at the Tahoma National Cemetary, 18600 SE 240th Street, Kent WA 98042 following a Service at the Crematorium at 11:15 am, Tuesday September 4, 2012.  We send our condolences to Doug and his family.

Registration Information

The 2012-2013 registration form and waiver.  Please note that in order to be guaranteed a spot in the same league(s) you played in last year, you must return your registration form, waiver, and full payment to the club no later than September 20.  Please contact either Barry Van Weiringen or Jim Sullivan if this is a financial hardship for you.  All such queries will be handled in strictest confidence.  Please see League Oversubscription Policy.  Also please note that if you submit payment for a league and due to oversubscription do not end up registered for the league, your payment will be refunded to you.

Open Houses

Hello all!  As always at the start of the curling season, we have open houses to bring in new members.  These are key to bringing in those smiling new faces you see out on the ice during league nights.  Open houses are completely staffed by volunteers, and this is where we need your help.  Jobs are available both on and off the ice - signing people in, cleaning shoes and fitting grippers, instructing out on the ice, visiting upstairs with guests, and bartending (must be licensed).

The open house shifts we're looking for help with are as follows:

  • Friday September 21 - 7 pm to 10:30 pm
  • Saturday September 22 - 10 am to 1 pm and 1 pm to 4:30 pm
  • Sunday September 23 - 1 pm to 5:30 pm
  • Saturday October 6 - 1 pm to 3:30 pm and 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm (chili cookoff immediately afterwards!)

No experience is necessary.  Any training you need will be provided.  If you would like to help out please email April Gale-Seixeiro at openhouses@curlingseattle.org.  Thank you!!

Club Access / Practice Ice

Once we have ice in, we will be opening up the club for practice ice.  Please see the Club Access Policy for details of key access to the club and how this access is granted and protected.

Crutch construction

Every year our club crutches take a beating during open houses and rentals and need to be replaced.  Josh Freedman is leading the effort to construct new crutches for us this year.  He is hosting a crutch construction event at his house near the club on Wednesday September 5 at 6 pm for a few hours.  Volunteers are needed to help Josh on this project.  You'll be working with power tools and PVC glue in an outside environment.  If you can help out please email April Gale-Seixeiro at openhouses@curlingseattle.org.
