We hope you're enjoying curling during the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, but did you recognize some familiar faces out there? Both Sean Beighton, US Men's and Mixed Doubles coach, and Colin Huffman, US Men's Alternate, are current Seattle residents and GCC members representing our country with the rest of the fine athletes competing this year. Our club has hosted a lot of press recently to talk about their journey and feature some of our own members including:
Congratulations to Team Dimmit (Andy Karsnia, Will Dimmit, Kate Fox, and Margee Will) for winning the Pacific NW Mixed Championship. In the final, they defeated Team Argetsinger from Evergreen Curling Club in an extra end. There were five teams competing for the title, three from Evergreen, one from Inland Northwest Curling Club, and one from Granite.
Congratulations to both Team Sherry (Greg Schatzman, Chris Sherry, Jeffrey Bruce, Tim Eng) and Team Zheng (Andrew Bell, Wangzi Ge, Alexander Lee, Bowen Zheng, Coach: Chris Sherry) for winning their respective 2021-22 PNWCA Club Men's and U18 Championships!
Long Time Member Wendall Harness died recently after a battle with heart disease.
He and his wife Lois became members of Granite upon moving to Seattle in 1991 and remained members until 2017. They started curling at the Nutmeg club in Connecticut - where Wendall served as president.
They viewed the club as their place of pleasure and were very proud of the club. Wendall particularly loved events that involved curlers of all ages. They help take care of the house and worked with both school programs and outreach events.
Undeterred by snow or COVID, four Senior Men’s teams played a spirited round robin that left three teams tied. The rink skipped by Chris Hester then won two playoff games to claim the first ever Pacific Northwest Curling Association Senior Championship. Chris’s other team members were: Phil Shryock, Jeff Wick, and Richard Palmason. Thanks to Stu Beck, who chaired the event, Joe Roberts and June Fox, our officials/bartenders, and Dave Leinweber and Keith Freeland, who provided great championship ice.
GCC hosted another fabulous and festive Holiday Spiel this year thanks to the hard work of our bonspiel chair Kathy Justice, our GCC Ice Crew, and all the volunteers. The "Prosecc-ho-ho-hos" won the main event this year with "Rudolph's Rebels" winning the B event, the "Holly Rockers" winning the C event, and "Ice is nice" winning the D event. For full scores, team info, and some great photos, head to our Holiday Spiel event page.
Gail's family has cancelled her service scheduled for tomorrow. The roads are too dangerous for most people to navigate safely.
They will be rescheduling sometime in the spring.
